Aktove Canyon. Flora and Fauna

На мапі

Транскрипт

Plant life in Aktove Canyon is truly remarkable. It is here that the primary habitat of an exceptionally rare species – Hypanis sandwort – has been preserved. This delicate plant, with its slender stems and pale, almost white flowers, may appear fragile. Yet it is remarkably resilient, growing directly on granite cliffs and anchoring its roots in the smallest cracks in the rock. Nearly the entire global population of this species is concentrated here, on the canyon’s rocky slopes. The cliffs themselves are adorned with a natural tapestry: the stone is covered in a vivid mosaic of lichens shimmering in shades of grey, yellow, green, and orange. Because lichens grow extremely slowly, it is difficult to imagine the centuries – even millennia – they have silently witnessed. Across the rocky slopes stretch distinctive steppe communities – low grasses, silvery feather grass, and aromatic plants adapted to intense sun, wind, and heat. Scattered shrubs bloom abundantly in spring and later provide shelter for local wildlife from the scorching summer sun.

Closer to the water, the conditions change. The air becomes cooler, and moisture-loving plants take root. This microclimate has remained stable for centuries.

The canyon is home to a wide range of animal species, from insects and spiders to birds and mammals. Life here is constant and dynamic, though it often goes unnoticed by those who move through the landscape too quickly.

All of these features make Aktove Canyon more than simply a picturesque destination. It is a space where a unique chapter of natural history has been preserved – a place where every plant holds particular significance.

And now, it is time to continue on.
